Supernatural 11x16 Recap: "Safe House"

Safe House.
Tonight's episode brings familiar faces with it when a dangerous creature is released in an old house and puts a woman's daughter into a coma. Bobby and Rufus once tracked the same creature so Sam and Dean look to the past in order to prevent any future deaths.

No leads on Cas or Amara means that Sam and Dean are out on some good old hunts. After a little girl ends up in a coma after she experienced cold spots and lights that had gone out. Sounds like a supernatural being. When Sam and Dean head to the house to take a look inside, a woman who lives next door mentions that the FBI showed up a handful of years ago to that house. Well, "FBI." We actually know these "FBI" agents.

A handful of years ago Bobby and Rufus actually went to the same house to take a look at the same creature that Sam and Dean are dealing with. A child also ended up unconscious when they went to investigate. Same cold room with the lights out. Same strange looking handprint on the little boy's ankle.

Sam and Dean step inside and get high EMF readings all over. They also end up staying at the same motel as Bobby and Rufus. There had been two deaths at the house, so it seems to be ghosts they're dealing with. It all seems to easy to Sam, though. A handful of years ago, Rufus believed it was a Baku (a Japanese spirit that devours dreams and nightmares), while Bobby believed it was a ghost. We get a general idea of when their hunt took place when Bobby says he was sleeping in his car because he was trying to figure out a way to stop the Apocalypse. He was worried about Sam and Dean.

When Sam and Dean see that both graves are ash, Sam gets his "I told you so" moment since they aren't actually hunting a ghost. While they're out digging graves, the mother also ends up in a coma. The same events as a handful of years ago are repeating themselves. The mother of the son then also ended up in a coma. The same doctor who worked with those patients is working with the mother and daughter Sam and Dean are dealing with. In the past, mother and son woke up fine. In order to get a better idea of what happened, they find the original mother from Bobby and Rufus' year.

It turns out that the wallpaper in the living room triggers what happens. The wallpaper being touched is what brought about the spirit both times. When she was in the coma, she experienced nightmares, and when she woke up, she wanted to get away from the house more than anything and she and her husband destroyed their credit to do so. The symbol behind the wallpaper is Sam and Dean's way to figure out what they're hunting. Rufus was also wrong as to what they were hunting. They're actually hunting a Soul Eater. It has the ability to take the soul out of the body and put it into its nest, which is why they experience the nightmares and the feeling of being in neither the real world or the world of the dead. As the body stays in the real world, it begins to wither away, which explains the victims' failing vitals.

Apparently the Men of Letters discovered a way to kill the Soul Eater, but one of them has to be inside the nest for it to work. Rock, paper, scissors decides who has to go in, and Dean loses, so he's the one that's going in. In his nightmare, he sees Sam dead, but pushes that image away. In Bobby's nightmare, since he's the one that has to go in during his and Rufus' time, he sees Sam and Dean dead. Each see the people (or person) they care about most.

Their job is to complete the sigil in both the real world and the nest. While Dean's in the nest he sees Cat, the daughter that's in the coma. She can see plenty more people than he can in the nest. He completes his side of the sigil, but the problem is that his body is then taken over by the spirit in the real world and is trying to prevent Sam from completing the sigil. Luckily, Sam is able to stop this possessed Dean long enough and kills the Soul Eater, saving the people inside the nest. Before Dean leaves, he also sees Bobby, which makes sense because the nest exists outside space and time. Everyone wakes up safe and sound.

Really enjoyed this episode and how the past mirrored the present, especially since we got to see Bobby and Rufus take on a case together. Next week, we're dealing with reapers again and it seems like Sam's going to get shot. Well, I guess we'll see how that goes, but he's obviously okay since it isn't a season or midseason finale. I'm curious to see what goes down.

Supernatural airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on the CW.
