Supernatural (10x23) Season 10 Finale Recap

Brother's Keeper. The "Carry On Wayward Son" montage began the episode showing that we have reached the finale. It's crazy how fast a season can go. Tonight's episode involved a life changing decision for Dean, but this decision would also affect Sam. Dean had plans to make a deal with Death. I was curious as to if we would have the parallel of Dean fighting Sam, alike to Cain and Abel. Crowley and Rowena finally came to face each other, but Cas got caught in the middle of them. No matter what, tonight's episode was going to hit emotions, especially after last week. It was going to be intense. I was also wondering if we would get to see the note Jensen tweeted about not too long ago and what it said. So, let's get into what actually happened in the ultimate moments of Season 10.

The montage that begins the finale always brings so many feelings. It's become a tradition, something to look forward to as the last episode starts. It's a review of their journey so far, what they've been through throughout the season. I really enjoyed how they incorporated the "Carry On Wayward Son" from the 200th musical episode at the beginning before going into the actual song. Very nice touch.

Sam gave another "We save Dean" speech in the beginning of this episode, but this time, he made a point. No one can tell him the consequences, so he's not going to let them stop him. Sam left him twelve messages, consistently trying to get in touch with him. Dean's not answering. He's drinking, seems like it's more now than before being that he woke up sweaty on his motel room floor. He's also still taking on cases, but instead, Rudy showed up for a moment, but Dean told him he'd take this one solo.

The case Dean worked dealt with some vampires. A girl and her friend, Crystal, were taken to a cabin of them. Crystal's friend was killed. She went to the cabin because she was abused at home, she had no validation, so dressing in a provocative way was her way of trying to get some. Unfortunately, she didn't and ended up dead. Dean went to save Crystal at the cabin, but Ruby was already there. The vampire threatened to kill Rudy if Dean kept walking toward him and Dean taunted. Although the vampire didn't stab him at first, he did not too long after, killing him. Dean saved Crystal and walked away with what seemed like not a care in the world.

Sam struck another deal with Rowena. Rowena knows which spell cures the Mark, but in return, she wants her freedom and the codex. Cas urged Sam to not make the deal, but he did. The problem is, the ingredients for the spell require the forbidden fruit, the golden calf, and something Rowena loves. Rudy called Sam to let him know where he was. While Sam went to find him, it was Cas' responsibility to make sure the spell happened.

Dean's haunted by everything he's done. Not killing the bad guys, but hurting the good ones. He saw flashes of Cas' bloody face in the mirror, followed by Rudy's. He snapped after seeing this, punching the mirror, smashing the microwave. He wasn't dealing well. Sam did find the cabin, but only after the police did. Sam eventually did find the Impala at the motel he was staying at, but Dean wasn't there. The motel was torn apart, and he left a note on the bed. "She's all yours," along with the keys to  Baby.

Dean went off to ask Death his question (and also offer him Mexican food he made). He wanted him to kill him. He's gotten to the point where he can't deal with what he's done. He doesn't feel like he can get better. The only thing that would drive Dean to suicide is his want to protect others, and there it is. He's in such a wrong state of mind, and if the violence hasn't shown that, giving away Baby has. We still had 30 minutes left at this point. Death refused to kill him because nothing could kill him. However, he could get rid of the Mark. The problem is, the Mark has to live on because it is the lock on the darkness that existed before the light of the world came into existence. In order for it to be removed, it has to be passed on to someone else, and Dean wouldn't have that on anyone.

The scenes between Sam and Dean. These scenes. While Dean thought the only way out would be his death, his only way out is Sam's death, paralleling the death of Abel. Dean traded his brother's life. Even if Death were to transport Dean somewhere far away, he would still have those dark tendencies because the Mark still has power over him. Similar to how it's showing that power now. Dean would never trade his brother's life, at least in his right mind. Dean pretty much believed they were evil. Sam said the opposite. They're good. They fight the evil. It was the Mark that was evil. Dean took every negative thing they've done and turned it against him, saying that those things made them evil. Among all the good they've done, those events made them evil. Sam threw a punch and their fight began. Dean was stronger, especially with the Mark. Sam couldn't take it anymore. He would never say that the real Dean was anything but good. He would never say it. He was allowing Dean to kill him in order to prevent him from killing anyone else. I really loved Sam this episode (I love him every episode, but especially tonight.) He didn't go back on anything he said. He didn't revolve his words to Dean around why he needed him, but why Dean was good. He was still determined to save his brother and if his death was going to help do that, he would give up his life for him. Death handed Dean the blade and it would be him who would kill. "Close your eyes, Sammy." Like they were children again, but Sam refused. He needed to give him something first. Sam gave him two photos, one's from when they were younger with their mother, to guide him when he's better. They would remind him of what it was like to love.  "Forgive me," was what he said before he would bring down the blade, but he wouldn't bring it down on Sam. He couldn't kill his brother. He turned it on Death, who crumbled to dust, killing Death.

Cas called on Crowley for help to get a hold of Oscar. Oscar is the only person, even thing, Rowena loves. It was Crowley's job to find him and he did. Rowena cares more about her freedom than she does about the one person she loves and she killed him, completing the spell. The Mark was gone, but Rowena wasn't done yet. She took the Book, freezing Crowley and Cas in their place. She used fatal dark magic on Cas to have him attack Crowley, but the scene cut before we saw what happened. Cas is an angel, so I have no idea how she can be that powerful that she could have that power over him.

Death said the darkness would come if the Mark was removed, and it certainly did come. I figured it would, I mean it's Supernatural. They tried to get away, but the Impala got stuck in a muddy ditch and the darkness made its way over the car. How the hell they're going to defeat this is the question. This finale was definitely an emotional ride, as I thought it would be. I really enjoyed the episode and I'm glad we're moving to an external bad, rather than Dark Dean, although I did love him. I saw a lot of hate towards it on Tumblr, but I disagree. It wasn't my favorite finale, Swan Song still holds that slot, but I did enjoy it. Ending it on a cliffhanger is annoying, but it gets you excited for the next season. Is Cas okay? Are Dean and Sam okay? What happened to Crowley? What about Baby, is Baby okay? The darkness is everything God put away before mankind, so it's more powerful than anything we've seen, but what comes with it? So many questions. The good thing is, the brother's are together and I'm so happy. This is the biggest thing they've done since the apocalypse. I'm interested to find out what happens next. Jeremy Carver said that things were about to go from bad to worse and I can't imagine what that could possibly mean for the brothers. We'll see when it returns after hiatus. Be sure to check back for more posts. Until Season 11.
