The Flash (1x23) Season 1 Finale Recap

Fast Enough. The final episode of Season 1. Everything throughout this season has led up to this moment. There would be time travel, a wedding, more conversations between the Team and Wells, Father-Son conversations, and life-changing decisions. It also looked to be an emotional episode from the promos, and according to Grant Gustin, it is. I was excited to see how the first fantastic season of The Flash would come to an end and the episode was certainly a great way to do that, along with a cliffhanger.

Eobard is an enemy of Barry in the future, which is why he killed his mother. But, he wasn't trying to kill her at first. He was trying to kill younger Barry, but older Barry saved him by moving him out of the house. Suffering a tragedy would then be worse, so he killed his mother. His speed to go back wasn't there anymore, but he still needed to return home, which is why he needed to create the Flash. This is also the reason why he needed the wheelchair to recharge himself. He proposed Barry with a deal. If he allowed Eobard to get back to his time, he would let Barry's mom live, his father never going to jail. He would get to undo all the evil Eobard has done. Barry's emotions were certainly struck by that proposition. The problem was, like Martin pointed out when he spoke to the group, everything could change. His relationships could change, the relationships he formed may no longer exist, he may never meet Caitlin or Cisco, he would never live with Joe.

While Joe was supportive of him finally getting the life he was supposed to have, his actual dad was worried about what would happen. Henry didn't want him to risk going back because of the natural order to things. He believes in there being a reason for everything. Barry doesn't know the cost. What if he changed as a result of it? This scene was so emotional between the two of them. Henry was so proud of who Barry's become, he's "always [been] a hero." His mom wouldn't want him losing who he is to save her.

Ronnie was back for good and he finally had plans to marry Caitlin like he once was going to. It wasn't a big extravagant event, but they did have their wedding. Caitlin's dress was so gorgeous and it's nice to see she finally got to use it. Martin led the short ceremony, and Snowstorm finally tied the knot. This was a cute moment amongst everything that was going on.

Iris and Barry also had a really nice scene during this episode. They talked about his decision. He's scared of being wrong. Things would be different between them, too. Knowing so much about each other was what made it so hard to tell her how he felt, and he waited to long and she fell for Eddie. Living with her and Joe has caused him to have a great life, better than he could imagine after what he went through with losing his mom. Iris told him the truth about what she thought, he needs to do what he feels best for himself, not what is best for other people.

According to Eobard, the plan was for Barry to create a wormhole through the Particle Accelerator. He needs to run fast enough, though, because if he doesn't, he'll die. He needs to reach a speed that he's never reached before. Cisco wasn't on fully on board, but he would help Barry. Cisco went to talk to Eobard about how to create the time travel machine he needed, and he finally confronted him about being killed in that alternate timeline. He apologized, but not for killing him, but rather that he holds traces of the events. And, according to Eobard, Cisco was affected by the explosion that's created so many metahumans. You know what I'm thinking? We're finally going to get to see the Vibe.

Martin Stein spoke to Eddie and he told him that he would get to choose his own future. If he doesn't have children, Wells never exists, or if he dies, he never exists either. He's a "wildcard." Martin also revealed that if things went wrong, they could develop a black hole, one that would swallow Central City.

The 'pep talk' that Martin gave him caused him to go back to Iris. To tell her that she's his coincidence. Him coming across her that day was only the first to bring them together, but there were more. They both ended this little moment with "screw the future."

Barry didn't want to lose Joe by changing the past, and Joe stated that he never would, but Barry was still worried about what would happen. He decided to go back. He would need to be sure to interfere after Future him saved younger him. The goodbyes were so sad. The "goodbye, dad" and "goodbye, son" between him and Joe was a very nice moment. It was time for him to run as fast as he could. The speed force showed him multiple things from the past, present and future. One, which was a glimpse at Caitlin Snow as Killer Frost. Another, which was Barry himself in prison, which certainly raises multiple questions. We also got a glimpse of the Legends of Tomorrow. He needed to focus on that event and then he opened the wormhole, going back in time.

Older him noticed younger him, but he held his hand up, signaling him to not go in. Barry stood the sidelines again and let his mother die, but this time he got a chance to talk to her. He introduced himself as her son and told her that he had a second chance to come back and tell her that him and his dad are both okay and that they love him. This scene was by far the most emotional of the entire season, I was in tears. Grant was right when he tweeted viewers would be. He watched her die again. Outstanding job with this scene for both actors. Grant definitely tugged at my heart.

Eobard was about to return to his time, but Barry returned and broke the machine. Interesting that before he left, something came out of the machine. A helmet, one with wings on either side, entered the actual time period through the portal. The helmet is most likely in reference to the original Flash, Jay Garrick. Season two is set to bring more speedsters, so I'm sure we'll hear more about him then. Barry already has everything he wanted. The Flash and the Reverse Flash had their final showdown, and Barry took it really hard, but it was Eddie who ultimately saved everyone. Eddie shot himself in the chest, preventing Eobard from ever existing. He was a hero tonight. There's no doubt about it. The wormhole reopened, creating a threat that impacted the entire city. Iris was in tears, but Barry got her and everyone else out of the area before she was sucked into the hole. Eddie's body, however, was. I'm curious as to where it went.

Stein said it was impossible to stop, but Barry had to try. He literally climbed a building and then the air to run in a circle around the hole, and it ended with him doing this. The question is would he survive? Since we're getting a season 2, he will, but in what sense? It may have an impact on him that we have yet to see. Also, a lot of people may be questioning how Barry is still the Flash, or if his mother would have still died now that Eobard ceased to exist. Because the events and things he did still happened, I'm guessing neither is changed. The reason being because he still existed to create the Particle Accelerator and kill Barry's mom, since these were things of the past. He just would no longer exist in the future, but we'll see if that is addressed next season. A little tease for Legends of Tomorrow was also part of the episode during the final scene.

I really loved the finale. It was heartbreaking, but such a good episode. Great way to end the season. Of course, be sure to check back as I'll continue to post. Recaps will be back in the fall when these shows return. I'll most likely be posting something related to The Flash again soon as I absorb this episode and really get thinking. I already have a few ideas. I hope you all enjoyed this season and the recaps. Until Season 2.
