Flash of Two Worlds.
Last week's episode ended with the introduction of Jay Garrick and this week we got to learn more about him. I was certainly looking forward to it, so let's get into how it all went down. Warning: This post does contain spoilers.
Jay Garrick comes with a message. Their world is in danger and because of the singularity they created above central city, they also created a breach between the two worlds. The two earths are now connected. Atom Smasher was the first example aside from Jay who got through the breach. Jay is The Flash of his world and he's trying to fight Zoom on his earth. Zoom was about to kill Jay when he was pulled into the singularity, being transported to the world of the Central City we know, but he is powerless now.
Zoom is quite possibly the fastest speedster according to Jay Garrick. He has the face of death and surely has something against Barry. Each villain that is coming into their world making an attempt to kill Barry is being brought to "Earth One" by Zoom.
This is the episode that introduces the concept of Earth One and Earth Two, but also mentions that their can be multiple others. In each, everyone exists with their own names, but can be doing different things. A bizarre concept for everyone to imagine. Martin believes this is possible, and if it is true, the Team has a problem on their hands.
Caitlin tested Jay for any possible resonance of speed powers and although she found none, she also administered a lie detector test without his knowledge, which he passed. Barry's still hesitant to believe him, understandably so. They can't allow a person who claims something without proof into their lab, allowing them to get to know their strengths and weaknesses without being sure they can be trusted.
Zoom's brought another metahuman to the Central City of Earth One. This one's made of sand. According to Jay, his name is Sand Demon, and he knows how to stop him. Barry doesn't want any of his help, and Jay doesn't know what else he could possibly do to get him to trust him.
Speaking of metahumans, Officer Patty Spivot is attempting to join Joe's task force against them, but he's not particularly keen on the idea. She surely has done her research, though. Can't deny that. Not to mention that her and Barry get along very well. She's the only one that wants to be on his task force. Her reason? Well that wasn't revealed till the end of the episode, but she knows Mark Mardon (Weather Wizard) because he killed her dad before he had powers. A few months later, he became a metahuman and she realizes that there are a lot of metahumans out there with those same villainous qualities. She wants to stop them and so does Joe. And with that reason, Joe finally allows her onto the task force. She should be a good asset to have.
Cisco's abilities as Vibe are coming out more with this episode. Again, we see an example of his ability to see an event that he wasn't actually at. This time between Sand Demon and Barry. Him and Martin Stein are the two leaders in trying to figure out this whole Earth One and Earth Two thing, which is especially causing problems with knowing who's the metahuman from Earth Two and who's the human from Earth One.
Barry's had a bit of an issue trusting people and Iris had to have a talk with him about it. The issue is that he trusted Harrison Wells for so long to have people die because of that trust. Like Iris said, not everyone is Harrison Wells. Barry's trust in people is so important in fighting these battles. Great words from Iris in this scene. He needs to learn to trust again because people may fear that they've lost his trust if he doesn't.
When Officer Patty is taken hostage by Sand Demon, Iris' talk with Barry comes in handy because he opens himself to trusting Jay and accepting his help. In order to defeat him, Barry has to learn something new. He has to learn how to use his speed and force to create lightning. Lightning plus sand equals glass, which would defeat Sand Demon. Patty being taken hostage is the exact reason Joe doesn't want anyone else on his team. He doesn't want anyone else getting hurt.
Cisco's learning how to manipulate his powers to do as he needs them to, making contact with the contents Barry gave him earlier in the episode and transporting himself to where Sand Storm and Patty are now. Martin's the only one Cisco tells about his powers by the end of the episode. Cisco doesn't want anyone to know because he doesn't like the power he has. What scares him is that everything Wells did was evil and he was the one that gave him this power.
Jay may not have his speed, but he's still useful in creating a diversion. Sand Storm doesn't know that his powers are gone, so while Barry avoids the concussive bomb, which would slow him down, it'll help them save Patty and defeat Sand Demon. Barry practiced over and over with Jay to create the lightning, and he wasn't able to do it then, but when he needed to, he followed Jay's instructions and got the job done. It took a Flash tag team for this episode.
Catilin and Jay have been getting along well. They each can relate to having lost something recently. What I want to point out is Caitlin's point, though. Just because your life has changed and is new, doesn't mean it's a bad one. That's important for both her and Jay, but also a good thing for everyone to know.
Mrs. West has come into the picture at the end of this episode. She's been calling Joe, but he hasn't been returning her calls and now she's there in Central City to see both him and Iris.
Cisco and Martin discover that there isn't just one breach, there are 52 (maybe a nod to the New 52 comics?) throughout Central City. The most powerful one being in Star Labs itself. That can prove to be a problem. This discussion was cut short because Martin collapsed. We do get a flash (no pun intended) of the other world where children are taking a tour of that Star Labs and are getting a treat by meeting Harrison Wells. Whether this Harrison Wells is evil or not has yet to be seen. Could he be the Zoom of Earth Two?
Some great conversations happened between Jay and Barry this episode. I'm looking forward to seeing their partnership grow over the season and from the start, Jay Garrick has proven to be a very likable character. The Flash is establishing its primary characters for Season 2 early on and it will certainly be interesting to see them in their roles. Captain Cold's back next week, but I'm also looking forward to learning more about Iris' mom and what has brought her to Central City, along with of course, seeing more of this Earth Two. Until then, I hope you all enjoyed episode two.
