The day has arrived for Season 4 of Arrow to premiere. Happy premiere day, fans! Prior to watching, I hadn't heard much negativity from the people of the internet that have already seen the episode. That's a good place to start. Lots of exciting things seem to be happening in the promo, so I was definitely looking forward to the show coming back. More than anything, I was exciting for what the title of this episode means... We're finally seeing Oliver become the Green Arrow. Here's something you should know before continue to read on if you're new to the blog. It's an important disclaimer: This post is not spoiler free. I'll be discussing and reviewing all parts of the episode. If you haven't watched yet, I highly recommend you do before reading on.
The happy couple is still in their happy state where we left them. Felicity's the new owner of Palmer Tech. Oliver and her are living together, enjoying their normal lives. Oliver also has intentions of proposing to her with his mother's ring. So, we can definitely assume things have been going very well for them. Meanwhile, the rest of the team is fighting crime. Laurel, Thea, and Diggle are the team when the episode starts off. They're fighting the new villains, known as the Ghosts, but they can't do it on their own. They're going to need Oliver's help.
The one and only Damien Darhk is introduced very quickly in the episode. Although his first scene was a short one, he certainly makes himself known. The Ghosts are having quite the impact on the death total in the city by killing multiple officials and he has a plan of his own to stop them.
Each member of the team has gotten stronger. Their skills have developed from the time we left them to the time we are at now in Season 4. Diggle's got a mask, Thea wants to be called the Red Arrow, and Laurel's combat skills have also gotten better. Good to see them improving without Oliver around.
Oliver had full intentions to propose to Felicity that night over some wine and soufflé, but Thea and Laurel interrupted their night. They need the Arrow. The Ghosts are a powerful group, assassinating people, and they won't be able to stop them alone. Felicity knows they need their help. They're their friends and they will help them even if "the Arrow's dead." Diggle, however, is opposed to having Oliver's help. Understandably so from the events of last season. Lyla's more forgiving of him. He didn't make the right choices, but he did what he thought was necessary. "If Oliver Queen always made the right choices then he wouldn't need [Diggle]."
Felicity and Oliver will help them, whether it's a unanimous want or not, though. Oliver immediately started to hand out orders, following his old habits. Felicity's back to hacking and finding out where the villains are. It appears that she hasn't lost her touch, but she has been helping the team behind Oliver's back. That's why she knows so much about the Ghosts. He's not mad at her, though. He just wishes that the entire time they were meant to be away together, she wasn't also partially with the team. She couldn't not help them and do her tech things. She missed it too much.
The team got its first look at Damien Darhk. (Everyone was in their suits except Oliver who opted for a black mask this time.) He's got some tricks up his sleeve and is quite the badass villain Arrow has been waiting for. He has the power of telekinesis, and that's sure to prove to be a problem. Bombs are set to be set off on the train station that will connect Star City to Central City. Not the ideal thing you want to happen at a brand new train station.
Oliver's trying everything to fix things with Diggle. Some harsh words were said by Diggle in this scene. He claims that he's more mad at himself for thinking that Oliver's someone that he's not. That inside, Oliver is just as dark as Ra's was, and that's why he was able to fool him so well. Maybe a bit too cold on that one, Dig.
Oliver doesn't feel like Diggle wants him around. He senses that something is off with Thea. And even Lance's words are getting to him, too, who was also a bit harsh. Oliver believes that he, himself, is the cause for the darkness and the only way to fight it is to be dark, but that's not true. He doesn't have to be that person. After his talk about this with Felicity, he decides to suit up, again; to go fight the Ghosts with the team. And there we have it. Hello, Green Arrow. The new suit is awesome. I know the promo photos were released so long ago, but we finally get to see it in action, and it truly is great.
Oliver had his first real confrontation with Damien Darhk on train headed to the station with explosives. There, he got to see Darhk's powers up close and personal, nearly being killed because he (Damien) stopped every arrow from hitting him, eventually getting close enough to Oliver in their hand-to-hand combat to slowly use his power to begin to kill him. He would have if Diggle hadn't shown up to shoot him from behind and save Oliver. Damien got away (obviously), but it's good to see Diggle's still looking out for Oliver. The name HIVE rings a bell with Diggle, but he's not saying anything about it yet.
Oliver and Felicity made the decision to stay with the team. Since Roy was said to be the Arrow to the public, he needs a new codename. He's going to be the symbol of hope, he's going to be the Green Arrow for Star City.
Between the real time and flashbacks, things are tough to write about without getting them confused unless something specifically stands out to me. That's why they're not usually commented on. I will say that it is clear that we can see how he's grown throughout them, which is nice. It's also exciting that we are getting closer to when the flashbacks will finally catch up with the pilot episode.
Here's a catch that makes the episode great: Lance is working with HIVE. Whether that's forced, or whatever reason it may be, he is working with HIVE. Also, the scene at the end that occurs six months later with Barry showing up to Oliver standing in front of a gravestone, with Oliver saying that he is "going to kill him." Presumably, he's speaking of Damien Darhk. Of course, we don't get a name. I have a few theories, but maybe I'll do a separate post for those. That really packs a punch because you know someone's going to die, and you know it's someone who means a lot to Oliver. Talk about starting the season off in a big way. Lots of claims were made that this would be a good premiere. I have to agree with them. It was exciting, it had the action it needed, and it had some surprises. It gets the season off to a great start and I'm so excited for what's to come (except the death at the end of it).
