The Flash Season 2 Premiere Recap

"The Man Who Saved Central City"
We've reached that time of year again. It's October. Shows are coming back from their Summer hiatus. So, happy premiere of Season 2! I'm excited to have new episodes to watch and it's good to be back talking about them. If you're new to my blog, here's an important disclaimer: This post is not spoiler free. I'll be discussing and reviewing all parts of the episode. If you haven't watched yet, I highly recommend you do before reading on.

So, we find ourselves 6 months post the events of the finale. Barry's on his own. He no longer has a team and instead, Cisco is working at the police station with Joe. Central City is having a day a "Flash Day" to honor him for saving the city from the black hole we saw in the final moments of Season 1.

Barry's continuing to fight crime on his own, along with secretly fixing up the buildings that were damaged and left damaged after the black hole. Iris would like him to show up to Flash Day, but Barry doesn't feel he's worthy of it and we finally find out why. It wasn't Barry who saved Central City. It took Firestorm to go into the hole and separate, producing what was needed to close it. Martin Stein survived, but unfortunately, Ronnie didn't come back down. For Barry, that's the man who saved Central City. A scene that could have had a bigger emotional impact gave more of a shock, instead. At least that's how I felt.

The Flash did show to Flash Day, but it wasn't as fun and peaceful of a day as the people expected. Atom Smasher showed, attempting to kill The Flash (because at this point, who's not trying to kill The Flash, right?). It was during this encounter that we got an insight into Cisco's powers as Vibe. Certainly something that will be interesting to see developed over the course of the season.

Team Flash is making an attempt to get the gang back together. Although Joe knows that Barry doesn't want to get anyone else involved, Iris is making a push to talk to him. Even Cisco is trying to get Caitlin, who now works at Mercury Labs, to come back. Star Labs belongs to Barry now and as soon as he got notice of a security breach shortly after receiving a USB with a video on it from Harrison Wells, he found the Team (minus Caitlin) trying to figure out a way to stop Atom Smasher. Though he knows they're trying to help, Barry was certainly not thrilled about the idea of him no longer being on his own and refuses their help by leaving his communicator behind. Probably not your best idea, Allen.

Atom Smasher feeds off radiation, which allows him to make himself bigger and therefore even more powerful than he already is. Luckily Cisco tapped into the security cameras and with Stein's idea of setting off the alarms, Barry was able to get away. An extremely pivotal moment for Barry because after he fell unconscious at Star Labs, Joe had some words of wisdom when he came to. He needs to allow himself to have the Team. Without them, he's going to get himself killed.

6 months later and everyone's still feeling the guilt from the day of the black hole. Even Caitlin blames herself for Ronnie's death because she didn't agree to go away with him after he became Firestorm. The reconnect between the two characters was important in bringing their friendship back. However, this wasn't the most important part of the scene. Barry and her watched Harrison Wells' video message to Barry together. The message contained what Barry has needed all along: a confession. A confession by Wells to the murder of his mother, allowing his father to be freed from prison. This scene achieved the emotional impact it needed to have. I got chills, from Barry finally being able to have his dad free at last, to Grant's performance of the emotion. That definitely hit me as it was intended. It wasn't overly emotional, but hit you with just enough.

The gang's back together and back to fighting villains as a team. It was a team effort to lure Atom Smasher and produce too much radiation that he couldn't absorb, ridding his of his strength. Here's the punch: he wanted to kill him because a very specific villain promised to take him home if he did. Who is that villain? The one and only Professor Zoom.

End on a happy note? Well, eh. It was so great to see Barry greeting his father as he was released from prison. A small welcome home party, but one with Barry's closest friends, his second family. Barry was so happy to look for apartments for them to live in, but that wasn't Henry's plan. He planned to leave. Why? That wasn't entirely explained, but maybe we'll learn more in the future.

And what else could make the episode better than the introduction of Jay Garrick? So excited for him to be a part of this season. I enjoyed this episode as a premier. It gets the Team back, explains what happened after the last moment we saw in the finale of Season 1, Jay Garrick, and introduces things that are to come. I also enjoyed the flashback connections that we saw between the past and current moments in their lives. There are lots of things that are set up to occur this season and the premier got it off to a running (excuse the pun) start. As Stein said, "Kadima." "Forward" we go with Season 2.
